Frank Poems: DOWN THE DOWNS

"Sussex Landscape," Gilbert Spencer, 1956

cresting the Downs,
the land falling away,
mist on the meadows

an ocean of gauze,
treetops floating on air,
arboreal islands

before the dawn chorus

silence

everywhere

in the distance the sea,
almost a mirage

the sun burning the mist,
light melting the dark

still beguiling my mind,
a lifetime later

freewheeling

blue sky to Brighton

"House by the Railroad," Edward Hopper, 1925
