Frank Poems: THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING

The Broad: "The Unbearable Lightness of Being," by Damien Hirst. Butterfly wings on household gloss on canvas. 96 x 60 in. (243.84 x 152.4 cm)

Milan Kundera thought being could be
Unbearably light. He didn’t discuss
What being would be like, were it unbearably
Heavy, nor which would be worse for us:
Heavy or light. Nor did he seem curious
To know if being, whether unbearably
Light or heavy, might be less injurious
Than not being, whether ever so heavy
Or ever so light. Likewise, Damien Hirst
Did a painting called The Unbearable
Lightness of Being, comprising a canvas
Covered with gloss paint and innumerable
Butterfly wings. Bright, indisputably
Beautiful, and unbearably heavy.

"House by the Railroad," Edward Hopper, 1925
