Frank Poems: WILDLESSNESS

The Guardian, 13th October 2022: There was a 64% reduction of Australian sea lion pups between 1977 and 2019 due to hunting, entanglement in fishing gear or other marine debris and disease. Photograph: Brad Leue/Alamy

Between nineteen seventy
And twenty eighteen
We successfully depleted
Wildlife worldwide
By seventy percent,
Mainly through hunting
And habitat extinction.

An extraordinary achievement
In anybody’s book!

Wildlife that won’t submit
To being cattle or a pet
Or living in a zoo
Is being successfully
Put to death.

Unfortunately, our efforts
In the same period
To deplete ourselves
Through war, starvation,
Murder, poverty,
Slavery, pollution,
Preventable disease,
Drug addiction, distress,
Traffic accidents,
Lack of regulation
And environmental degradation
Have proven
Stubbornly ineffectual.

Perhaps climate catastrophe
Will be the solution.
